Commenter Guidelines

Please read before making comments on any unltd.com Blog Post.

Re Anonymous Comments:

At unltd.com, we recommend the use of real names and discourage anonymity and the use of pseudonyms for commenting on blog posts.  At a minimum, if you do elect to cloak your identity when you Sign Up, we will ask that you register with a real, plausible sounding name and let us know that you are, in fact, using a pseudonym.  We know that, at times, there are compelling and valid reasons for a person maintaining his/her anonymity.  (Such reasons do not include the freedom to engage in unchecked vitriol.)  To that end, for both an individual's and our protection, we do not need to know the individual's real identity.  Do know that registering in such a manner will detract from the many social, interactive, and shopping experiences to be enjoyed at unltd.com.  Also know that, while we're not going to focus and control the ways by which people can work around using real names (through the use of a plausible, but fake name), we do monitor comments and will delete violations to unltd.com's "Conduct Becoming" policy.  In addition, violators' accounts will be terminated and deleted.

What We Want to Provide You, the Members of the unltd.com Community:

Our primary goal is, while allowing for and encouraging freedom of speech, expressing of opinions, candid discourse, and lively debate, to provide a platform where participants from all walks of life and cultures can know that their human dignity, distinct qualities, and what they have to say are appreciated and  celebrated.  That goal includes promoting and safeguarding an arena where civil exchange of ideas and opinions prevails amongst all users.

Also, we believe in an open exchange of ideas and have no interest in moderating, censoring, or deleting comments because of points of view.  (If we can, we may try to check for grammatical errors ... but that is not a guarantee ... so please try to make your points of view as well written, grammatical, and cogent as possible.)

"Conduct Becoming" Guidelines for Those Wishing to Post Comments:

  • Keep your comments focused and of a reasonable length so others will read and be better able to respond to them.
  • If a comment has struck a nerve, take a deep breath before hitting the "Your Comment" link and responding.  Remember, what you say will remain attached to your name forever and may, in fact, appear elsewhere online.   A collegial tone will always win the day over a combative stance.  You also need to think about whether you want to be forever associated with any controversy that might ensue as a result of your posted comment.
  • Stay on topic ... focus on the conversation and not on the personalities of the presenters.  Don't let it become personal.  Insults, name-calling, and "ad hominem" attacks are never warranted.  Vigorous debates are good and productive;  a barrage of competing "tit for tat" insults is not.
  • Exercise restraint when it comes to excess comments on any one post.  Don't hog the conversation so as to deter others from participating.
  • If you feel a real need to engage in an in-depth conversation with a fellow commenter, go to that user's profile page (by clicking on his/her name) and send him or her an email via the network's internal messaging system and indulge in a more personal "one on one" conversation outside the comments arena.

Prohibited Behaviors:

We will delete comments that we - to the best of our ability or as a result of being notified - determine contain any of the following:

  • Potentially libelous statements;
  • Obscene, explicit, or racist language including hate speech;
  • Personal attacks, insults, or threats;
  • Commercial product promotions or advertising - blatant or implied;
  • Copyrighted Information (short snippets with attribution aside) taken from another source without permission (Basically, don't pass off someone else's creative work as your own.);
  • Private and/or personal information published without consent;
  • Comments totally unrelated to the topic of a respective post's topic and/or conversational thread (We understand that folks can sometimes meander and take detours during the course of a conversation.); and
  • Hyperlinks to online content that are not directly related to the conversation.

By partaking of the privilege of leaving comments at this or any unltd.com site, you are agreeing to abide by these Guidelines.  Users who violate them, especially in an egregious manner, will very likely lose the privilege of participating in the social aspects of the unltd.com network and may have their user accounts terminated.

Contact Us if you become aware of "Conduct Unbecoming" ...

We encourage you to "Contact Us" at Blogs@unltd.com to report activity that you believe violates our Guidelines ... especially if the conduct appears egregious.  (After all, this is your Community and we want you to have a vested interest in it!)
